Leading Under Pressure

The Invisible Reality: Uncovering the Patterns We Follow

Two silver fish swim face to face underwater, seen from above with light rippling on the surface.

Recently, I listened to a short philosophical anecdote.

Two young fish are swimming along when they pass an older fish coming the other way. The older fish nods and asks, “Morning, boys. How’s the water?”

They keep swimming. After a while, one fish turns to the other and asks, “What is water?”

I had to rewind the audio and listen again, fully present.

What is water?

That question stayed with me.

It connects deeply with a phrase I often use: just because something is common, it doesn’t mean it is normal.

That is the point here. The fish is in the water and does not even question it.

In a session, a client wanted to explore the root of her tiredness. She is under high pressure, had to change her admin twice recently, and problems were piling up.

That was just the surface.

After a while, she was able to picture and verbalize what she wanted: peace, joy, and success. Simple words. A big shift for her system.

When we explored when the tiredness started, she paused and said, “I don’t know. I feel like it was always there.”

At that moment, something clicked. It freed her job from being the cause of her tiredness. It freed her kids. She had been looking for culprits. When, in reality, her system had been organized this way for decades, and it had worked for her.

Tiredness was her water. It was her natural way of operating, so familiar that she no longer noticed or questioned it.

It was not just a blind spot. It lived at the level of her map of the world, the unconscious framework that defines what one feels as normal, expected, and unquestioned.

And that is the good news.

What becomes visible can be changed. Awareness is the first step.

Your turn. What is your water right now?
