Reimagining Balance Through Harmony

A pie chart divided into six labeled wedges: Career, Family, Health, Growth, Learning, and Rest.

Balance became a loaded concept. Everybody has an opinion about it:

  • There is no such thing as balance
  • You must have balance
  • If you had balance, you would not feel so tired.

The truth is, if you ask 10 people about the same subject, you will get 10 different answers. Not only about balance, but about any subject.

With polarization, we may even become rigid about the word balance, which may bring us to exactly the opposite of what we were looking for. Funny, no?

Recently, I came across a perspective that brought me genuine lightness. It was something like this: you will never have balance. Think about work-life balance. Will you really divide the same number of hours into all areas of your life? With this frame, the answer is no. Our hours will never be equal.

So I was guided to think about harmony. And that word instantly made me relax. Harmony felt more realistic. More achievable.

And that slight shift helped me relax and find peace right where I was.

This leads to an important question:

  • What is balance at this stage of your life?

With each phase of life, our definitions of balance, success, freedom, happiness, and fulfillment change.

Your stage now may be to dive deep, work long hours, and be fully invested in your career.

Your stage now may be to bring more quality time to your kids.

Your stage may be taking care of your health or rebuilding your energy.

You may be preparing for retirement and imagining how you want to live that next chapter.

For some, balance is going back to school or pivoting careers.

For others, it is taking a sabbatical to reset.

And for many, it is building a business on the side while maintaining stability.

Regardless of where you are, the most critical part is awareness. Have clarity, own your season, and move with intention.

Another belief I have about balance is that is okay to rest. In a society that demands speed and more and more, slowing down to speed up is not optional. Recharge. Take care of yourself. Regroup, recenter, reignite your flame.

I have witnessed phenomenal progress and momentum in my clients after intentional pauses.

Regardless of the speed, you can ask yourself:

  • Am I moving toward the life I desire? Am I growing?

Remember, it is not about the destination. It is about the path and who you are becoming along the journey.

Trust that, in the long run, you will create your own balance and harmony.

Whether you call it balance or harmony, the name does not matter. What matters is that you:

  • Define what it means to you today.
  • Take one small step to get closer to it.

And always remember, you can refine or change your definition at any time.

As a bonus, this week, choose one small step that brings you closer to your version of it, and notice how it feels in your body and in your day.

Enjoy the ride and choose wisely.
