Two Myths About Time
March 3, 2025 · 3 min read
Time is a relative subject. Although you can measure it, each person will feel it differently.
It was January 31, and I was meeting with a group. The person said, “It will be December, and January will not end.”. I paused momentarily and could only wish January was longer in my mind. The day was the last day of the month, and I had generated incredible momentum that month; I wanted more. The person was precisely on the other side. January was challenging for him, with plenty of challenges, and he just wanted the month to end.
As I write it now, I realize how much power we give to time. It is an illusion that January’s continuing will keep my momentum and, if it ends, will solve his challenges. The stories we tell ourselves are fascinating. Even more fascinating, we believe those stories.
Time is a recurring topic in my coaching sessions; it may be a desire to be more productive, to have more time, to organize it better, to get more of it, and so on. At the end of sessions, it all comes back to how we see time and, in consequence, how much power we give to it instead of taking responsibility for it.
[The Myths]
- Myth #1 - I don’t have time
That’s a lie. I do have time, and so do you. We have plenty of time.
I frequently hear this myth from clients, friends, and people from all walks of life. The truth is that we are not willing to deal with the consequences of our choices, so it is easier to say, “I don’t have time.”.
The reality is that we are always choosing where to invest our time, consciously or unconsciously.
Keep in mind that even not choosing is a choice. Most people don’t reflect on this further. This posture makes us feel unempowered and victimized.
- Myth #2 - I would accomplish so much more if I had more time
No, you would not. I guarantee it. The truth is that you bring yourself where you go. So, if you manage your time and energy poorly now, more time will only amplify it. I have witnessed this so many times.
Again, it is an illusion and comforts us when we wish we had more time. So, we can be in waiting mode and wait for something external to save us. I am sorry to say it will not happen. You are your own savior, no one else.
[Invitation]
Now it’s your turn.
What do you believe about time? Is it true? Is it really true? Is it empowering you?
I would love to hear your thoughts and/or insights.
Happy reflection!
