The Shift from Fixing Problems to Choosing Them

Being intentional about the problem you choose to solve can change the trajectory of your career.
In a recent conversation with an executive, he said:
“I love solving problems.”
At first glance, this sounds like a great mindset. But once this idea settles in the brain, something interesting happens: the mind starts scanning for problems to solve.
As humans, this is almost instinctive.
What is broken? Let me fix it.
The challenge is that even when nothing is truly broken, we can keep searching for problems simply because solving them feels productive.
There was nothing wrong with his operating system. He could absolutely continue functioning in problem-solving mode.
The upgrade was subtle but powerful: slow down and intentionally choose the next big problem that is truly worth his time and energy.
Once his brain had a clear target, the trajectory of his month shifted. He moved back into the executive seat. Distractions and noise lost their grip because he knew exactly where his energy belonged.
I see this pattern often. Managers stay busy fixing problems through workarounds, rarely reaching the root cause because the next issue is already waiting.
Managers fix problems.
Leaders decide which problems no longer matter.
Great leaders choose the right problems to solve.
So the question becomes:
Which problem is truly worth your attention right now?
