The Paradox of Leadership: When Opposites Coexist

April 6, 2026 · 2 min read

A man in silhouette stands centered where warm orange light meets cool blue light, the two tones blending softly behind him.

Last December, my great-uncle passed away.

It was the first time, in the experience of losing someone, that I remained fully present in my body, observing how it was processing it.

It felt unusual, and it took me a while to understand what was happening.

In a nutshell, I was experiencing grief and love at the same time.

I felt genuinely happy for him. He had been looking forward to this moment because he believed it would reunite him with his wife.

At the same time, I felt sadness. I was thinking about his children, the extended family, and how they would process this loss close to Christmas time.

Both were true.

Feeling happiness for him did not remove the grief.

Love and grief coexist.

Relief does not cancel sadness.

Recently, I came across the concept of paradoxical thinking. It helped me name what I had already experienced.

Leadership is often like this.

It is not binary. It is not 0 or 1. It is not either or.

When people and systems are involved, things do not simply add up. They multiply in complexity.

In a recent session, a leader navigating a performance case felt confused. She felt compassion for the employee, and at the same time, she knew the decision was the right one for the team and the company.

Two truths, at the same time.

A mature nervous system can hold both.

In practice, this is what allows leaders to navigate complexity without collapsing into one side.

The key is awareness and allowing both sides to exist. That often brings the peace needed to move forward.

Your turn.

Where in your life or leadership are you trying to choose, when the work may be to hold both?

Enjoy your integration.
