The Gap and the Gain: Why Recognition Matters More Than You Think

August 18, 2025 · 2 min read

A person stands at a fork in a wooded path between two signs reading "GAP" and "GAIN."

I learned the concept of The Gap and the Gain from a book of the same name, it blew my mind. It’s wonderfully simple and incredibly powerful.

High performers tend to focus on what’s next and rarely take time to celebrate what they already have. That pattern often leads to dissatisfaction and burnout.

In a recent session, a client was upset after a hard week. Her body felt off, energy was low, she made mistakes, and problems kept piling up.

She was judging the week against an idealized, robotic standard, fixating on what was missing (the Gap) and blurring the view of what she’d actually achieved (the Gain).

“How far you go” is for you to decide.

I asked her to list what she’d accomplished compared with the week before.

Slowly, she began: I went to the gym every day. I showed up for every appointment. My family is facing challenges, and I was there to support them. I made progress on the certification I’m working toward. She kept naming wins, one after another.

When she finished, she paused, surprised, and said, “Wow, maybe it wasn’t as bad a week as I thought.” I could see the light return to her eyes and the smile that followed. Sometimes, all that it takes is looking with the right lenses and treating yourself as if you were your best friend.

She realized that despite the challenges, she showed up as her best and did what she could given the circumstances. She’d accomplished a lot, handling surprises, adapting her energy, and still moving forward.

Both stories can be true. One version focuses on the Gap, what’s missing. The other focuses on the Gain, how far she’s come.

The second story empowers. It builds momentum and creates real fulfillment.

How often do you celebrate your wins?

Where could you be more intentional about noticing the gains?
