How to Navigate Choice Overload

An aerial view of a single forest path splitting into many winding trails that fan out through green woods.

We were happier when we did not have so many choices.

When I heard this recently, it stopped me in my tracks.

A manager explained that, instead of offering multiple options to his team, he preferred to make the decision himself and simply communicate the choice. His logic was simple: fewer choices, fewer headaches.

It made me pause, reflect, and analyze.

Because there is truth in that. Decision fatigue is real. Endless options often create paralysis. And when everything is available at all times, we fall into a subtle yet constant fear of missing out.

On one hand, it is a dream to live in a world where I can watch any movie at any time, without waiting for a fixed showing time like before.

On the other hand, this same freedom can become a trap. It becomes easy to postpone what matters. For example, delaying a hard but important feedback conversation with someone on your team because you can always do it later.

We have more freedom than ever before. I genuinely believe this is the best time to be alive.

But freedom has a cost.

Every choice carries a consequence. The real power is not in choosing perfectly, but in choosing consciously and owning whatever follows.

So the question becomes:

How can you make the most of the privileges you have today?
