Sustainable Performance & Focus

Goals Don’t Create Results. Habits Do.

February 18, 2026 · 2 min read

A 3D scene where cracking concrete letters spelling "GOALS" give way to golden thread letters spelling "HABITS" atop bronze gears labeled "SYSTEMS," rising toward a glowing "RESULTS" icon.

I have received many questions about goal consistency and how to make it last. For that reason, I will dedicate the next few articles to exploring practical ways to support sustainable progress.

According to research cited by Harvard Health, about 80% of New Year’s resolutions are abandoned by February, and only around 9% are maintained throughout the year.

This already tells us something important. Most people do not fail because of a lack of desire. They struggle because their current operating system does not support the change they want.

Last week, we looked at breaking the year into quarters and then into months. This week, I invite you to focus on what you can truly control.

Many goals are defined in by external factors.

  • I will get promoted.
  • I will make $1M.
  • I will lose 20 pounds.

SMART goals can help, but they are often not sufficient on their own.

Goals do not elevate habits. Goals always fall to the level of habits. And habits, supported by systems, are what generate results. If you want different outcomes, elevate your habits.

If you are aiming for a promotion, ask yourself: What are the daily behaviors that reflect that next level? What operating rhythm do you need to embody?

  • Track how often you show up, already operating at the next level.
  • Track how many strategic ideas you bring forward.
  • Track how often you take ownership and anticipate risks.

Decide who you are becoming, and start acting from that place today. It will not be perfect. You are human. But it will be powerful, because it shifts success from something you hope for into something you build.

This is one approach you can test and adapt to your reality.

You do not need more motivation. You need an upgraded operating system that enables sustained progress over time.

And then, enjoy the fulfillment that comes from steady, intentional progress.

What would it look like to choose one area you can fully control and experiment with it for the next 30 days?
