Do you really want what you say you want?
-
I want a promotion.
-
I want to work for Company X.
-
I want a regular job
-
I want to start my own business
-
I want a relationship.
Do you really want what you say you want?
The question is simple, and I often witness people wishing for things that will clearly set them up for failure.
-
“I want a regular job” → Have you considered that you might be bothered after a couple of weeks?
-
“I want a promotion.” → Have you considered all the additional responsibilities and tasks it may bring you?
-
“I want a relationship” → Are you truly emotionally available right now?
The reality is that for everything in life, we will have pros and cons. We will have what we call good things and what we call bad things.
It is easy to define the pros and anticipate the benefits and joy we will experience. When it comes to the cons or downsides, they are often overlooked.
The game changes when you anticipate what may go wrong and possible challenges, so you can mitigate them or simply prepare yourself.
I recently started a process with a client who just got a promotion, and she was feeling overwhelmed. She worked hard to be promoted, but why was she not happy? She was asking herself. There is so much pressure now, she continued. Her dream position has turned into a nightmare.
Exploring with her, the pressure is expected due to the nature of the position; it is normal, and it will not go away. Her work now is to learn how to deal with this pressure.
Also, she forgot what it was like to be bad at something. As she had been in her previous role for more than two years, she had mastered it.
I invite you to think about the things you say you want. Do you really want it? Are you ready to create and have it in your life?
As best as possible, anticipate the good, the bad, and the ugly. This way, your dreams can remain dreams and not turn into nightmares.
Happy reflection!
